FARM CLOSED TO ALL VISITORS

With today’s current directive from Ohio Governor Mike DeWine to “stay at home”, Stearns Homestead will remain closed to all visitors. Our farm volunteers and farm animals are our primary concern. The farm animals will be cared for, feed and fresh water provided daily, and stalls and barns cleaned by ‘essential’ volunteers. We appreciate your compliance with this ‘no visiting’ policy as we navigate these challenging times over the next several weeks.

Making it through the cold and snow

It’s been a rough winter, well actually just a couple rough weeks of winter so far.  But we are happy to report that all our animals and all our volunteers have survived the arctic cold temperatures in January.

The warm and cold fluctuating temps do cause some concern for some of our animals, especially the horses, but everyone  is doing really well right now.

We are looking forward to spring just as everyone is.  But with the thaw brings a new set of challenges that we hope to address in the coming months.  Spring thaw creates a muddy mess at the farm.  It’s when our volunteers lose boots as they get sucked down into the mud.  And it’s when we are challenged to let the animals out for some excercise but don’t want them to get stuck in the mud either.

One of our goals this year is to upgrade the back horse stall area with a heavy use pad construction of stone and sand to help remedy the muddy conditions.   We have lots of work to do around the farm as always, but look forward to another great year for everyone to enjoy.

See you in the Spring!

Opening day is May 21.
